Overview

What is CELPIP?

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a general English language proficiency test. The CELPIP Test allows test takers to demonstrate their ability to function in English.

CELPIP-General is suitable for people who need proof of English-language skills when applying for permanent resident status in Canada.

CELPIP-General LS is suitable for people who need proof of listening and speaking proficiency for Canadian citizenship.

What is the difference between CLB and CELPIP?

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the standard measure of language used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to describe, measure, and

recognize the English language ability of immigrants and prospective immigrants

who plan to live and work in Canada.

After completing the CELPIP test, those scores are your CLB levels in each skill. However, your official CLB level is calculated from your lowest score of the 4 components.

How do I know what my current CLB level is?

This can be confusing for students to know or understand. The CLB Language Level Guide may help you determine what your level is. You can also refer to CLB Comparison Chart if you have previously taken a different English language proficiency test.
